Physical education plays a crucial part in the lives of every child at The Rydal Academy and inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It leads to positive life changes in terms of improved health, learning key skills and the development of positive relationships and values such as fairness and respect.
In addition, PE at Rydal promotes opportunities for children to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges both as individuals and in groups. At Rydal, children learn the fundamental motor skills that enable them to develop the competence that creates confidence and leads to safe and successful participation in a wide range of sports.
Every half term, children will be taught two sports and will learn a range of key skills through those sports. Pupils at Rydal will experience fifteen sports in total: athletics, basketball, cricket, dance, dodgeball, football, gymnastics, hockey, netball, new age kurling, orienteering, parachute games, racket sports, rounders and rugby.
Our school participates in numerous sports events and tournaments to showcase the skills learned. To ensure progression and development of skills throughout the school, every sport will have a specific skills focus that lessons will be centred around. Learning these specific skills within a range of sports promotes a healthy, lifelong association with PE and sport.
Every year we enter all school sports competitions available to us in the local area. We have been awarded and retained the School Games Gold Award for five years running due to our commitment to the development of competition across our school and in the community.
At the Rydal Academy we aim to enter every single sports event the region has to offer. Sports events are a great way to showcase the skills pupils have learnt in PE and put themselves to the test. Rydal pupils take part in both sports festivals and tournaments. Sports festivals promote inclusivity and aim to promote engagement within that sport. The tournaments we enter have a more competitive element.
