PSHRE – Personal, social, health and relationships education
At the Rydal Academy we believe that a high-quality PSHRE education should give children the knowledge and skills to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life. This will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain.
Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about citizenship and economic wellbeing, staying safe, relationships, health and wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.
Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.
Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them.
In an age-appropriate way, the school will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.
Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about these areas should help them to put into practice and develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts.
PSHRE is taught in a discreet session for at least 30 minutes per week. Many elements of PSHRE feed into other subject sessions throughout the week. Our provision is customised to capitalise upon the experiences and backgrounds of our pupils as well as being designed to give them relevant new experiences.
Our PSHRE curriculum develops children’s depth of understanding through individual and group work, discussion, role play and practical activities. We return to areas of learning in different contexts within and across year groups in order to gain a deeper and more insightful understanding of the matters, skills and processes within PSHE.
The PSHRE curriculum is also complemented through assemblies and the work of outside agencies such as the school nurse, NSPCC and dentist.
The curriculum is structured as follows:
- Autumn 1: Friends
- Autumn 2: Ourselves
- Spring 1: Online safety
- Spring 2: The wider world
- Summer 1: Mental wellbeing
- Summer 2: Families
Year 1 to 6
